OLLIE POPS

This is it!  This design for DECKED is my submission printed on a 8 1/4" popsicle deck and currently on display as of TODAY through the 1st of October at Hamilton, Ohio's The Strauss Gallery.  This work is a riff off skate terminology, specifically the popsicle board shape and ollie trick. Its title, OLLIE POPS, is the punch line to the joke on the popsicle's stick. Very straightforward. The concept and outcome just appeal to me.

Do You Like Skate Arts?

Here it is!  The deets for DECKED- The Strauss Gallery's largest show to date!  It's an art exhibition centered around skate culture in which I have the pleasure to participate with SO MANY talented artists, showing my specially designed board inspired by skate lingo.

I'll share more on the board next post, but for now please feel free to check out The Strauss Gallery's Facebook Page for all up-to-date show information!

EDGY Skate Decks!

Hey, folks!  Just gettin pumped up for the DECKED show at Strauss Gallery in Hamilton, OH coming up soon, which I'll be posting more on shortly, and thought it'd be a great time to share the custom skate deck designs from my EDGY collection at https://laurabmakesart.threadless.com/accessories/skateboard/complete-pro.

Each design was tweaked to best suit the format of these popsicle-style boards.  The decks come either by themselves, with hanging gear, or with a selection of trucks/wheels.

To quote the shop:

Some Background on EDGY and Me

EDGY is the culmination of the start of a learning process.  Kina like the completion of a Phase 1.

After loosing my retail job at the start of the pandemic I felt a bit lost.

It was time for a change and the opportunity to refocus my skills on something I love presented itself.  I have a background in art, having attended art school for a time, and naturally being inclined toward the creative, I discovered a potential in Print On Demand design work.  POD allows me to share my work with others quickly and in a variety of creative ways.  Through Threadless.com, and the care and support of my family and friends, I have been able to clear a path that has both expanded my breadth of knowledge and application and has created an avenue through witch to share my work!

The nine EDGY designs, along with the collection image, I came up with are a foundation upon which I have begun to build and expand.  The nine are divided into three categories: SHAG, JUICE, and FRINGE.  SHAG was the first to be created, followed by JUICE and then FRINGE.  Each design has four layers.  In SHAG the designs are split into groups of Natural, Cool, and Warm colors.  In JUICE the divisions are gradations of the three secondary colors of Green, Orange, and Purple.  For FRINGE the segments are based on tetradic color schemes that shift through the color spectrum most clearly in the bottom section from Orange to Red to Pink.

In applying these designs to over forty different items from Apparel to Decor to Accessories I tailored each image, considerably altering where appropriate, to suit each product.  The greatest shifts in applications include the Cut and Sew Shirts, the Leggings, the Skateboards, and the Backpacks.  With each alteration I learned quite a bit.

I am also pleased to share that in working through Threadless.com it has allowed for my designs to be applied with consideration for fair labor, environmental awareness, and an opportunity to share some of what I earn directly with groups working hard to improve the direction of the planet, society, and the lives of those within it.

It's been brilliant to experience the love and support of my community as I forge a new chapter in my life. I am using my gratitude for them and it to fuel the pursuit of a carefully curated contribution back into the fertile soil that fed me.
